Quality is one of the three core values that Merit USA was built on — alongside service and support. In the flat-rolled steel business, quality means delivering product that meets specification every time, providing the documentation to prove it, and having the expertise to catch problems before they reach your production line.
Our quality program covers the full supply chain from mill sourcing through processing and delivery.
Sourcing from Qualified Mills
Merit USA sources flat-rolled steel from North American integrated mills and electric arc furnace (EAF) mini-mills operating to well-established industry standards. We do not purchase steel of unknown provenance or from mills whose quality systems we have not evaluated. Our mill relationships are long-term partnerships, and we monitor quality performance data across our mill supply base to identify and address specification deviations before they become customer problems.
Integrated mills (blast furnace-based) and mini-mills (scrap-based EAF) both produce high quality flat-rolled steel, but their product characteristics differ in ways that matter for specific applications. Our procurement team understands these differences and sources from the appropriate mill type for each product family and application requirement.
Mill Certifications and Test Reports
Every coil of flat-rolled steel we distribute is backed by a mill test report (MTR), also known as a certificate of conformance or material certification. The MTR documents:
- Chemical composition — Heat analysis confirming elemental percentages (carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, and alloying elements)
- Mechanical properties — Tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation from the mill's physical testing
- Coating weight — For coated products (galvanized, galvalume, tin mill), the applied coating weight per applicable ASTM standards
- Grade and specification — Confirmation of the ASTM or proprietary specification the material was produced to
- Heat and coil number — Unique identifiers enabling traceability back to the production heat
MTRs are retained in our system and can be provided with orders on request. For customers who require documentation for their own quality records or for downstream customer requirements, we can accommodate MTR requests at the time of order placement.
ASTM Compliance
ASTM International publishes the primary specifications used by the flat-rolled steel industry in North America. Merit USA stocks product to the following key ASTM specifications, among others:
- ASTM A1008 — Cold rolled steel, commercial steel through high strength grades
- ASTM A1011 — Hot rolled steel and HRPO, commercial through high strength
- ASTM A653 — Hot-dip galvanized and galvannealed (galvaneal) flat-rolled steel
- ASTM A792 — Galvalume (55% aluminum-zinc alloy coated) flat-rolled steel
- ASTM A623 — Tin mill products (general provisions)
- ASTM A624 — Electrolytic tinplate
- ASTM A879 — Electrogalvanized steel
When a customer specifies a particular ASTM grade or subgrade, we supply product that meets those requirements and can provide the MTR documentation to confirm compliance. See also AISI Standards and Programs for additional context on steel industry standards.
Dimensional Accuracy
Flat-rolled steel is specified to dimensional tolerances for gauge (thickness), width, and flatness. Dimensional deviations outside tolerance can cause downstream problems ranging from tonnage variation in stampings to tracking problems in roll-forming lines and edge contact issues in progressive dies.
Merit USA verifies that material received from mills meets dimensional requirements before it enters our inventory. Our slitting operation is calibrated and monitored to maintain slit-width tolerances within ASTM A635 or customer-specified requirements. We do not release slit product that falls outside width tolerance, and we track slitter performance to identify and correct equipment drift before it causes out-of-tolerance product.
Surface Quality
Surface quality standards vary by product and application. Galvanized and galvaneal products have different surface finish requirements than bare cold rolled; tinplate is held to particularly tight surface quality standards because of its use in food-contact applications.
Merit USA's team understands the surface quality requirements of the major application categories we serve and sources product accordingly. For applications with specific surface requirements (e.g., Class 1 or Class 3 surface on galvanized, or specified roughness Ra values on cold rolled for forming applications), please specify your requirements when ordering so we can confirm that the material in our inventory meets your specification.
Handling and Packaging Standards
Material quality doesn't stop at the steel's chemical and mechanical properties. How a coil is handled, packaged, and transported affects whether it arrives at your facility in usable condition. Dented coil ends, telescoped coils, and surface damage from inadequate packaging all create rework and scrap.
Merit USA maintains coil handling protocols that protect material through our processing operations and into packaging. We use appropriate edge protectors, moisture-barrier films for coated products, and banding patterns that secure coils during transport without damaging the outer wraps. Our delivery logistics are coordinated to minimize handling transfers that create damage risk.
Continuous Improvement
Quality performance in a steel service center is not static — it requires ongoing attention to supplier performance, process monitoring, and customer feedback. The Merit USA team tracks quality incidents and corrective action data to drive improvements in our operations and supply chain over time.
If you have a quality concern with product received from Merit USA, contact us immediately. We take quality issues seriously and work to resolve them quickly, including material replacement when product fails to meet specification.
