Merit Steel USA — known to our customers simply as Merit USA — is a West Coast flat-rolled steel service center and distribution company serving the manufacturing and fabrication industries across Southern California, Northern California, and the Pacific Northwest.
Our business was built on a straightforward promise: deliver the right flat-rolled steel product, processed to your specifications, on time, without drama. In an industry where supply chain hiccups can halt production lines, reliability isn't a bonus — it's the baseline expectation. We've built our operations to meet that bar consistently.
What We Do
Merit USA is a steel service center, which means we sit between the steel mill and the end-user manufacturer. We purchase flat-rolled steel in large master coils from integrated mills and mini-mills, hold inventory at our West Coast facilities, and supply customers with the product and processing they need — in the quantities, gauges, and widths that match their production requirements.
This model gives our customers several advantages over buying direct from the mill:
- Smaller order quantities — No minimum mill run requirements; order what you need
- Faster lead times — Stock on hand vs. mill lead times of 6-10 weeks
- Processed product — Slit-to-width, recoiled, or cut-to-length, ready for your line
- Regional proximity — West Coast facilities mean lower freight costs and faster delivery
- Technical support — Our team knows flat-rolled steel and can help you select the right product for your application
Our Product Philosophy
Flat-rolled steel encompasses a wide range of products — from bare hot-rolled coil to highly engineered coatings like galvanized, galvalume, and tin mill products. Different applications demand different material properties, and specifying the wrong product can result in weld quality problems, coating adhesion failures, or corrosion issues down the line.
At Merit USA, we carry the full spectrum of flat-rolled products specifically because our customers' needs span that full spectrum. A stamper making automotive components needs different material than a roll-former producing metal roofing panels, which is different again from a can manufacturer sourcing tinplate. We stock all of these product families so we can be a single-source partner across your bill of materials.
For a detailed technical breakdown of each product family, visit our full product range page, or consult our steel specifications reference. The Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) and ASTM International also provide authoritative resources on steel service center operations and product standards.
Processing Capability
Beyond distribution, Merit USA operates as a full service processing center. Our slitting equipment runs to as narrow as .50″ with up to 50,000 lb coil capacity, enabling us to take master coil and produce slit coils that load directly onto your press or roll-former without additional conversion. This processing capability is a core differentiator — many distributors resell, but fewer process in-house at this scale.
Serving the West Coast Manufacturing Base
The US West Coast supports a diverse and large manufacturing sector — aerospace suppliers, automotive stampers, appliance manufacturers, metal building producers, agricultural equipment fabricators, and countless job shops producing custom parts for industrial customers. Merit USA was established to serve this base with regional inventory and regional expertise.
Our locations in Southern California, Northern California, and the Pacific Northwest mean that most of our customers can receive next-day or two-day delivery from a Merit USA facility. That geographic reach translates directly into faster response to urgent material needs, something national distributors with centralized Midwest inventory often can't match.
Commitment to Quality
Every flat-rolled steel product we distribute meets the applicable ASTM, AISI, or customer-specified requirements. We maintain certifications and mill test reports for our inventory and can provide material traceability documentation on request. Our quality commitment extends from the materials we source through to how we package and ship processed product to protect it in transit.
