Flat-Rolled Steel Products

Full spectrum — bare, coated, and specialty flat-rolled steel from qualified West Coast inventory.

Flat-rolled steel products including galvanized, cold rolled, and tinplate coils

Merit Steel USA carries the full spectrum of flat-rolled steel products required by West Coast manufacturers, fabricators, stampers, and roll-formers. Our inventory spans bare steel through coated and specialty products, covering the gauges and widths required by virtually every flat-rolled steel application.

All Merit USA products are sourced from qualified mills, backed by mill test reports, and available in master coil, slit coil, or cut length depending on your production requirements.

Galvanized Steel

Galvanized flat-rolled steel is one of our highest-volume product lines and a core competency at Merit USA. We stock both hot-dip galvanized (HDG) and electrogalvanized (EG) product across a range of coating weights to serve construction, HVAC, automotive, appliance, and agricultural equipment applications.

Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) — The standard for corrosion resistance in construction and outdoor applications. The zinc coating is applied by passing cold rolled substrate through a bath of molten zinc, bonding metallurgically to the steel surface. Merit USA stocks a full range of coating weights from G30 through G210, enabling specification of the right corrosion protection level for the application environment.

Electrogalvanized (EG) — Applied by electroplating, electrogalvanized product provides a thinner, more uniform coating than hot-dip, with a smoother surface finish preferred in applications where appearance and paintability matter. Common in appliance, automotive body panel, and consumer electronics enclosures.

ASTM A653 is the primary specification for hot-dip galvanized flat-rolled steel. Our team can help you select the appropriate grade (CS, FS, SS, HSLAS) and coating weight for your application.

Cold Rolled Steel

Cold rolled steel is produced by rolling hot rolled steel through a cold reduction mill, producing a tighter dimensional tolerance, smoother surface finish, and improved mechanical properties compared to hot rolled material. It is the base material for many coated products (galvanized, tin mill, bonderized) and is widely used in stamping, roll-forming, and precision fabrication applications.

Merit USA stocks cold rolled coil and slit coil to ASTM A1008 in commercial steel (CS), drawing steel (DS), deep drawing steel (DDS), and high strength grades. We maintain inventory across gauges from approximately 10 gauge through 30 gauge (0.135″ to 0.012″) with full-width and slit-to-width options.

Key applications include automotive interior components, appliance panels, furniture and shelving, electronic enclosures, and precision metal stampings.

Hot Rolled Steel

Hot rolled steel (HR) is produced at high temperatures and is the base feedstock for the steel service center industry. HR coil has a scaled surface (blue-gray mill scale from the rolling process) and is used in applications where surface finish is not critical and where the lower cost of hot rolled vs. cold rolled material is advantageous.

Merit USA supplies hot rolled coil and sheet to ASTM A1011 in CS, SS, and HSLAS grades. Common applications include structural components, agricultural equipment, heavy equipment frames, and general fabrication where the material will be welded or painted rather than stamped to tight tolerances.

Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled (HRPO)

HRPO is hot rolled coil that has been processed through a pickling line to remove mill scale, then lightly oiled to prevent rusting. The result is a cleaner surface than bare HR that is better suited for applications requiring painting, light forming, or laser cutting. HRPO bridges the gap between HR and cold rolled, offering a cost advantage over cold rolled while providing better surface quality than bare HR.

Merit USA stocks HRPO in a range of gauges and widths, with slit-to-width processing available. ASTM A1011 applies for the base material requirements.

Galvalume®

Galvalume is a coated flat-rolled steel product with a coating of approximately 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon applied by continuous hot-dip process. The aluminum-zinc alloy coating provides superior corrosion resistance compared to standard galvanized product, particularly in outdoor and high-humidity environments. It is the standard for metal roofing and pre-engineered building panels in North America.

Merit USA stocks Galvalume coil to ASTM A792 for roofing, cladding, and other construction applications. We also carry Galvalume in lighter gauges for appliance backs, duct work, and other interior applications.

Galvaneal

Galvaneal (also written as galvannealed) is produced by heat-treating freshly galvanized steel to diffuse the zinc coating into the base steel, producing a zinc-iron alloy surface. The resulting surface has a matte, gray appearance with no spangle, and is highly paintable with excellent paint adhesion characteristics. Galvaneal is widely specified in automotive body panels and components requiring superior paint adhesion.

Merit USA supplies galvaneal coil to ASTM A653 (Type A) in the gauges and widths used by automotive stampers and appliance manufacturers.

Tinplate and Tin Mill Products

Tin mill products — including electrolytic tinplate (ETP) and tin-free steel (TFS/ECCS) — are thin-gauge flat-rolled steel products with a tin or chromium-based coating applied for corrosion resistance and solderability. They are produced to very tight gauge and surface finish tolerances and are primarily used in food and beverage can manufacturing, aerosol containers, and specialty packaging.

Merit USA is one of the West Coast's leading distributors of tin mill products, supplying ETP and TFS in base weights (lb/bb), temper designations (T-1 through T-6 and DR grades), and coating weights to ASTM A623 and ASTM A624 specifications. This is a technically demanding product category that requires expertise in application requirements — our team can assist with product selection.

Bonderized Steel

Bonderized steel (also called paint-lock or phosphate-coated steel) is cold rolled steel that has been treated with a zinc phosphate coating to improve paint adhesion. It is commonly used in metal door and window frames, ductwork, and applications requiring a painted finish where maximum paint adhesion without priming is desired.

Merit USA stocks bonderized coil and slit coil for fabricators and roll-formers serving the construction and architectural markets.
